The Exodus Team

Rob Grimwood leads the Exodus team and has been flying in Microlights for over 30 years and has been teaching people to fly for 23 years since the age of 18. Amassing over 11,000 hours flying experience – more than most airline pilots - he teaches on both fixed-wing and flexwing microlights. Rob set up Exodus Airsports at Plaistows in 2007.

Rob was World and European Champion in the dual-seat 3-axis class in 2013 and 2014 flying a competition version of the Skyranger Nynja, before taking a break to organise the 2016 World Championships at Popham in the UK. Prior to building the competition Nynja, Rob was also multiple World and European Champion in the dual-seat flexwing class. He was also the UK Microlight Champion for nine consecutive years until 2014.

He is the only pilot to have held World, European, and National Championship titles at the same time in an individual class. Rob also organised the microlight side of the World Air Games in Dubai in 2015, which is regarded as the world's most prestigious flying competition.

Qualifications

Rob is a CAA-approved Instructor and Examiner, which means all the ground exams can be completed ‘in-house’ as can your final General Skills Test (GST).

Rob is also an FIC instructor, which means he teaches people to become instructors, and is one of just two people qualified to do this in the UK. In order to be able to teach people to become instructors, Rob and the Flying School must have specific approval from the CAA. All of this means that Exodus has to be run to the highest of standards.

As well as teaching instructors, Rob also examines them! Every three years each Flying instructor is required to pass an instructor test to prove their continued competence.

Rob is also the Chief Test Pilot for the British Microlight Aircraft Association (BMAA) on fixed-wing aircraft. Rob has also been sharing his knowledge of instructing by chairing the BMAA Training committee for the last 5 years.

Finally, Rob has a First Class Masters Degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Brunel University, meaning he is well qualified to keep the Exodus fleet of aircraft in tip-top condition. Rob also puts this engineering background to good use by working for another UK Microlight Manufacturer as their Airworthiness Engineer.

More recently Rob, along with John, decided to move into the business of Aircraft manufacture by combining the Apollo DeltaJet trike with the Aeros topless wing to create the DeltaJet500 Stingray, a whole new, British-built aircraft available to the UK market.
